Karamjit
struggles in rented rally car
The Star, 30/3/2008
KUALA LUMPUR: Defending
champion Karamjit Singh finds himself trailing after being
forced to race in a rented two-wheel Proton Satria 1.6 on
the opening day of the Malaysian Rally, which was flagged
off in Bahau, Negri Sembilan, yesterday.
His Mitsubishi Evo 8 was
stuck at the port due to red tape and has cost the Flying
Sikh the chance of starting the year with an outright win.
As Karamjit struggled, Team
Perodua M5’s Lim Leong Onn established himself as
the man to beat, leading Team Pennzoil’s R. Gunaseelan
by a comfortable margin to consolidate his top position
on the timesheet.
Six cars fell victim to the
bumpy and twisting course and among the unlucky ones was
championship hopeful James Russell, whose car engine stalled
just 500m from the first start gate.
Next to go out was the only
woman driver, N. Kancana of Team Pennzoil, whose car’s
steering and rear suspension were damaged in the opening
stage.
