First For Women
NST, 7th December 2007

THE participation of Team GSR Pennzoil Racing this time around, apart from being the biggest entry ever, will see the inclusion of a woman driver for the first time.

The all-women car will be part of the four-car team at this weekend's final round of the Malaysian Rally Championship, at the Felda Chuping sugarcane plantations in Perlis.

Kanchana Nandhakumar (pic), 26, a newsreader from Kuala Lumpur, will be sitting in and driving a rally car for the first time in her life, having been attracted to the sport a few years ago.

"I am very excited at getting an opportunity to drive a rally car. I have always been fascinated with rallies. I have loved driving and I believe it is a quick way to improving my driving and having fun," she said.

She will be partnered by electrical engineering student Sairuz Hazwani Mohd Ali, 22, another new face, as her navigator.

The duo are expected to enter their Proton Satria 1.6 in the showroom class, a category that was recently introduced by MRC organisers, Wheel Sport Management.

The class is aimed at encouraging young talent who are on a tight budget but at the same time want an opportunity to compete in a rally event.
